Support the Clear Horizons Act (SB4)

Support clean water protections (SB21, SB22)
Support two state bills- SB22 and SB21 to restore Clean Water Act protections that had been in place for almost 50 years. The U.S. Supreme Court decision Sackett v. EPA removed federal Clean Water Act protections for up to 95% of New Mexico’s waterways. The state of New Mexico does not yet administer a water quality permitting program, unlike 47 other states and all other southwestern states. The state legislature appropriated $7.6 million to create such a program in 2024. These bills will create that system, and restore clean water protections that had been in place for nearly 50 years to ensure people and nature have safe water.

Support funding for beaver conservation (HB141)
For the first time ever, the New Mexico House of Representatives general appropriation for the Department of Game and Fish includes $1.5 million—$500,000 per year over three years—for the conservation of species of greatest conservation need, including beavers. Beavers are crucial allies in wildfire resilience, clean water, carbon sequestration, and creating excellent habitat for wildlife. Voice your support for this funding to your representatives and the public!

Support reform for the New Mexico Game Commission (SB5)
A similar bill passed in 2023 but the governor vetoed it. This bill would improve the Game Commission appointment process, set term limits for commissioners, add requirements for appointment and removal of commissioners, create a State Wildlife Commission nominating committee, reframe the Department of Game and Fish as the Department of Wildlife, and rename the Game Commission as the Wildlife Commission. It would also update the Department of Game & Fish’s mission to include conservation of non-game species.

Support the Landowners Living With Beaver Fund (HB3143)
The Landowners Living With Beaver Grant Program Fund will be established within the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) through the Oregon Conservation & Recreation Fund (OCRF) to provide funding that supports beaver coexistence strategies for private landowners efficiently, quickly, and as needed.

Support the Oregon 1% for Wildlife Bill (HB2977)
Oregon needs to reform wildlife conservation funding because existing mechanisms rely on revenue from hunting and fishing sales, which are declining. This bill would increase the state transient lodging tax from 1.5% to 2.5% and use that extra money to implement the state wildlife action plan. This will serve as a dedicated source of funding for the conservation and research of species of greatest conservation needs, and their habitats, helping to end the decades-long era of declining, anemic funding for wildlife conservation in the state.

Oppose Wolf Depredation Compensation Program Bill (SB777)
Oregon’s Wolf Predation Loss Compensation Program and federal programs are broadly supported and promote coexistence and reduce conflicts with wolves. This bill would increase compensation from fair market value to a value of seven times that rate for certain livestock, which would be an outlier nationwide. This would threaten the financial solvency of the program, which granted 100% of compensation requests in 2023. Oregon’s wolf recovery has stalled, and depleting the compensation program would make matters worse.

Oppose bills intended to undermine our youth climate victory (HB285, HB270, SB221, HB346)
We won a huge case representing 16 brave youth plaintiffs in what one scholar called “the strongest decision on climate change ever issued by any court.” Now, Montana lawmakers are trying to legislate their way out of having to comply with the order guaranteeing Montanans’ constitutional right to a “clean and healthful environment,” including a livable climate. Please reach out to your representatives and urge them to vote against these bills that would erode Montanans’ rights.

Ask the Public Service Commission to heed our petition to consider climate costs in regulation
WELC petitioned the Montana Public Service Commission to request that it adopt rules requiring consideration of climate change in its regulation of Montana gas and electric utilities. Montana courts have twice found that the state has an obligation to consider climate change in decision making. This petition asks the PSC to abide by Montanans’ Constitutional right to a clean and healthful environment which includes the right to a stable climate. With broad oversight authority over Montana utilities, the PSC makes decisions that can either promote or discourage continued utility investment in fossil-fuel infrastructure. Thus, the PSC has the most consequential role of any decision-making body in the state in determining Montana’s impact on the climate.
