The Western Environmental Law Center proudly supports the Green New Deal resolution introduced in the U.S. Congress by Senator Ed Markey, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and dozens of congressional co-sponsors.
The climate crisis presents a daunting challenge to our interconnected natural heritage, communities, and economy. It is foolish to sugarcoat the reality. But the climate crisis also presents an inestimable opportunity for all people and communities of good faith to work together in service of a resilient and even thriving future.
The Green New Deal provides the national-level vision, ambition, and rally point we urgently need to accomplish that task. It acknowledges that solutions to the climate crisis must necessarily involve not only technology and economics, but fundamental concepts of equity and justice that get to the heart of who we are as a country. It further acknowledges that climate change is not a future risk, but present reality, calling for action to meet 100 percent of our country’s power demand through clean, renewable, and zero-emission energy sources hand-in-hand with action to safeguard clean air and water and boost the resiliency of community infrastructure and our environment to withstand climate impacts.
We look forward to engaging in constructive, good faith dialogue to strengthen, refine, and implement the Green New Deal to make a positive, legacy-defining impact. As this dialogue takes place, we also re-commit ourselves to using the full power of existing, bedrock environmental laws to challenge ill-advised fossil fuel projects and to safeguard the public lands, wildlife, and communities of the American West. There’s work to be done, and no time to waste. Together, let’s make it happen.
