Somos el peor estado del pa\u00eds en metano desperdiciado: cada a\u00f1o, la regi\u00f3n de Four Corners libera el metano equivalente a seis desastres de Aliso Canyon.<\/p>\n<p>La contaminaci\u00f3n por metano crea importantes problemas de ozono y riesgos para la salud p\u00fablica en las comunidades vecinas, incluido el aumento de las enfermedades respiratorias. Y como vimos recientemente con la explosi\u00f3n y el incendio de varios d\u00edas cerca de Nageezi, este desarrollo intensivo de petr\u00f3leo y gas amenaza la seguridad p\u00fablica. Pero los efectos no son solo locales: los desechos de metano tambi\u00e9n afectan nuestro sistema educativo en todo el estado. La industria desperdicia m\u00e1s de $100 millones en metano anualmente en las tierras federales y tribales de Nuevo M\u00e9xico, despojando al p\u00fablico de las regal\u00edas que podr\u00edan financiar nuestras escuelas y maestros.<\/p>\n<p>No sorprende que el punto caliente provenga principalmente de la infraestructura de petr\u00f3leo y gas. Como se mencion\u00f3, la industria misma informa niveles tremendos de contaminaci\u00f3n por metano del petr\u00f3leo y el gas. Esto refleja la realidad sobre el terreno: 20.000 pozos de petr\u00f3leo y gas activos, miles de kil\u00f3metros de oleoductos, plantas de procesamiento y otra infraestructura industrial de petr\u00f3leo y gas en la regi\u00f3n. Pero el estudio de la NASA revela un giro inesperado: de alrededor de 250 sitios de petr\u00f3leo y gas altamente contaminantes, solo 25 &quot;s\u00faper emisores&quot; representan m\u00e1s de la mitad del metano total. Esto sugiere que podemos abordar f\u00e1cilmente esos &quot;s\u00faper emisores&quot; mientras preparamos el escenario para la acci\u00f3n para identificar y corregir los emisores m\u00e1s peque\u00f1os a trav\u00e9s, por ejemplo, de la planificaci\u00f3n para guiar el desarrollo antes de que ocurra.<\/p>\n<p>Afortunadamente, las soluciones sensatas est\u00e1n a la mano. Deben ser elogiados por ver a trav\u00e9s de la cortina de humo de la industria y tomar medidas para mejorar las vidas de los nuevomexicanos, de los cuales un abrumador 73 por ciento apoya las medidas para prevenir la contaminaci\u00f3n y el desperdicio de metano.<\/p>\n<p>Sin embargo, la industria del petr\u00f3leo y el gas contin\u00faa socavando su credibilidad al oponerse a estas reglas. Los apologistas de la industria ya han cuestionado el estudio de la NASA, sin reconocer que el tiempo de la obstrucci\u00f3n ha terminado. De hecho, es notable que de m\u00e1s de 475 productores de petr\u00f3leo y gas en Nuevo M\u00e9xico, solo 10 participan en el programa voluntario Natural Gas STAR de la EPA. Adem\u00e1s, la industria se ha apresurado a perforar y fracturar el gran paisaje del Chaco, construyendo infraestructura que solo exacerba el punto caliente del metano. Esta perforaci\u00f3n contin\u00faa a pesar del hecho de que el administrador de estas tierras, el BLM, a\u00fan tiene que completar un plan de gesti\u00f3n para considerar si el desarrollo es apropiado en primer lugar y, de ser as\u00ed, c\u00f3mo proteger la tierra, el aire, el agua y las comunidades de su impactos<\/p>\n<p>Las reglas de BLM y EPA har\u00e1n que ciertas compa\u00f1\u00edas de petr\u00f3leo y gas tomen medidas sensatas para reducir el desperdicio de metano y la contaminaci\u00f3n en tierras p\u00fablicas y tribales.
