VICTORY! Santa Fe National Forest OHV Lawsuit Intervention<\/h1>\n

The Santa Fe National Forest comprises approximately 1.6 million acres in northern New Mexico. The forest contains four wilderness areas, covering nearly 300,000 acres, as well as two \u201cwild and scenic” rivers prized for their hunting and fishing opportunities. New Mexico\u2019s finest rivers, including the Pecos and Jemez, offer brown and rainbow trout fly-fishing opportunities as well as native fish. The forest is also home to rare species such as Mexican spotted owls, goshawks, southwestern willow flycatchers, Jemez mountain salamanders, Rio Grande cutthroat trout, and New Mexico meadow jumping mice.<\/p>\n

The Santa Fe National Forest completed travel management planning for the forest. The final decision closed more than 5,000 miles of off road vehicle routes on 400,000 acres to motorized vehicles, does not allow motorized big game retrieval, and protected a number of key resources, including habitat for the Jemez mountain salamander, a species threatened with extinction. The New Mexico Off-Highway Vehicle Alliance has repeatedly sued the Forest Service challenging the restrictions on motorized vehicle access to the Forest. WELC has successfully intervened to defend the government\u2019s plan multiple times and we will continue to do so in the future.<\/p>\n

In July 2014, a federal court in New Mexico held oral argument in the lawsuit and shortly thereafter upheld<\/a> the June 2012 decision by the Santa Fe National Forest supervisor that protected more than 400,000 acres from cross-country motorized use within the forest.<\/p>

The New Mexico Off-Highway Vehicle Alliance appealed this decision to the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals, who heard oral argument on the appeal in May 2015.<\/p>

UPDATE 4\/28\/16: VICTORY! We successfully defended the Forest Service! Now\u00a0more than 440,000 acres of the Santa Fe National Forest will remain protected from \"cross-country\" motorized vehicle use. More than 5,000 miles of routes, paths, and trails will be free of motor vehicles and the damage they can cause.\u00a0<\/span>Motorized vehicle use is still allowed in designated areas, which is how it should be..<\/span><\/p>
