WELC Campaign Victory- Field Burning to End in Southern Willamette Valley!
Field Burning to End in Southern Willamette Valley!

Based on the overwhelming medical evidence, the history of deadly car accidents and decades of public health complaints from Willamette Valley residents, the Oregon legislature took a huge step forward to protect the health of Oregonians by banning field burning in the Willamette Valley floor starting next year.
"Some of the icons of recent Oregon history tried and failed to put an end to field burning" said Charlie Tebbutt, Co-Director of the Western Environmental Law Center's Campaign to End Field Burning. "It took a Herculean effort to get this bill passed. This is an incredibly important public health victory for both rural and urban Oregonians."
For decades, Oregonians have suffered health effects from the field burning of grass residues in the Willamette Valley. Due to the location and the prevailing winds, the smoke from field burning envelops the Eugene-Springfield metropolitan area and surrounding smaller communities, causing respiratory problems and obscuring visibility. Already, the prevalence of asthma in Oregon is considerably higher than the U.S. average and continues to rise. Thanks to this campaign, Oregonians are on their way to breathing cleaner air.
Our sincere thanks to all of our Campaign supporters - your help was crucial to achieving this important victory.
