Law Firm Associate Host Opportunity for Deferred Attorneys

Western Environmental Law Center is a nonprofit public interest environmental law firm that works to protect and restore Western wildlands and advocates for a healthy environment on behalf of communities throughout the West.

In light of the deferrals by many private law firms of incoming associates, some of which offer stipends for working in the public interest during the period of deferral, Western Environmental Law Center is entertaining inquiries from deferred associates for legal fellowship positions of at least one year duration in our offices in Eugene, Oregon; Helena, Montana; Durango, Colorado; and Taos, New Mexico. Compensation for these fellowships will depend solely on the terms of the deferred associate’s agreement with his or her law firm.

Fellows will assist our staff attorneys in a diverse caseload utilizing federal, state and local environmental laws.  We seek candidates with excellent research, writing, and oral presentation skills, an ability to work well in a team setting and coordinate with the staff in our other offices, and a genuine interest in protecting the environment and communities of the West.  We offer a friendly, team-based work environment.

Our attorneys average almost 14 years of experience and are handling cutting edge matters focused on climate change, the preservation of western wildlands and wildlife, and the protection of healthy environments for western communities.  Eugene office staff attorneys also run the University of Oregon School of Law’s Environmental Clinic and have significant experience mentoring young attorneys.

The Western Environmental Law Center’s programs and employment are open to all.  We value diversity and do not permit any discrimination against applicants, employees, or volunteers on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, sex, age, religion, sexual orientation, marital status, veteran status, medical condition, or disability in any of our policies or programs.  We are committed to applying affirmative action principles among comparably qualified candidates for available positions and strongly encourage people of color, women, and members of other minorities to apply.
